Important Reminder Before You Start Cleaning
Inspect the interior part of your microwave oven and verify which areas are the dirtiest. You might also want to determine if any parts can be removed. If there are any, then you can remove them and clean them first. This can help in making your cleaning process easier.
Various Ways of Cleaning Your Microwave
Water and Vinegar Combination
Get a microwave-safe glass and fill it with water. Do not keep it full, just keep it midway. Put one tablespoon of vinegar on the glass and place it inside the microwave. Choose high settings for at least five minutes. The steam of the mixture will spread on the walls of the microwave. This can help in loosening up the dirt. Gently remove the glass from the microwave. Use a rag or a paper towel and wipe the interior part of the microwave. Remove the turntable and wash it thoroughly. You could also use a dishwasher in cleaning it.
Use Baking Soda
Spills are often found on the floor and turntable of your microwave oven. Sometimes this is something that cannot be prevented. To remove them, you will need to mix one part of the water with two parts of baking soda. Apply the paste on the hardened grime and leave it there for at least five minutes. Use a wet sponge or wet cloth in removing the baking soda mixture. Use a paper towel in removing the residue.
Wet Paper Towels
If you are in a hurry, then you can use the quickest method which is to place lots of soaking wet paper towels inside the unit. Keep it on high settings for about five minutes. This is very effective in loosening up any hardened grime. Wait for a while until the paper towels have cooled down. Use these paper towels in cleaning the interior portion of the unit.
Vinegar and Baking Soda
The best thing about using these two ingredients is that they are readily available in any household. To create the mixture, you need to place a quart of warm water in a bowl and add four tablespoons of baking soda. Be sure to mix them thoroughly until the baking soda is fully dissolved. Soak a sponge or clean cloth into the mixture and use this in cleaning the interior of the microwave.
In a separate microwave-safe bowl, combine the same parts of white vinegar and water. Put the bowl inside the unit and be sure to set it on high power for about three minutes or until the water has boiled. Let it stay there for 10 minutes so the steam can spread all over the interior. Remove the bowl and the removable parts such as the turntable. Soak a cloth on the water and vinegar solution and used this in cleaning the interior area. Clean the removable components by soaking them in hot water with soap.
Window Cleaner Solution
If you would like to use a window cleaner solution, then be sure to dilute them before using them. Combine one part of the water with two parts of the window cleaner. This solution is already enough in cleaning the interior and exterior parts of your unit. Soak a sponge into the solution and use this in cleaning the interior. Take out the carousel so you can clean the base of the microwave. Be sure to clean the upper shelf, vents, and ceiling.
To make sure that it is thoroughly cleaned, get a clean rag and soak it in water. Use the rag in removing any remaining residue. Use olive oil in removing any tough spots. Let it dry and smell the interior. If there are any remaining scent of the window cleaner, then wipe it with a wet cloth.
Put some warm water on a microwave-safe bowl and add some dishwashing soap. Place it inside the microwave oven for a minute or until such time that it starts to steam. Take out the bowl and use a sponge in cleaning the interior part of the microwave. The steam can loosen the grime so you can easily wipe them out. Adding baking soda would be great since it can eliminate the odor inside the unit.
Slice the lemon and place it in a microwaveable plate along with one tablespoon of water. Put the plate inside the microwave oven for one minute or until the interior of the oven gets steamy. Remove the plate and use paper towels in wiping the inside part of the oven.
There are different types of commercial cleaners that you can use in removing the dirt on your microwave. However, most often its unpleasant smell will stay inside the oven. As a result, it might change the taste of your food.
The best solution would be to choose an odor-free commercial cleanser. After you have done cleaning, then leave the door open for one hour or more. Be careful when using commercial cleanser inside your oven.
Cleaning the Exterior of the Microwave
Finally, after you are done cleaning the interior, the next step is to clean the outside part of your microwave oven. Use a clean cloth and wipe the top, sides, front, and back of the oven. Return the removable parts inside the oven. Keep in mind that the more you use your microwave, the more it requires cleaning. Ideally, you can clean it every few weeks to keep it looking good.
